Stress and Hair Loss

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

Wanting to tear your hair out may just be a figure of speech, but did you know that prolonged stress can actually lead to hair loss? Now by stress, we mean something more than just a rough day at the office or a fight you have with your friends: We mean actual, physiological stressors that change the way your body functions, including its hair growth process, in a significant way. What are the top stressors that can lead to hair loss? Wigs and Hair Solutions has the list:

Changing your diet

A dramatic change in your diet, particularly if you are cutting back your calorie intake, can lead to hair loss. Losing weight at a rapid and unhealthy level is a shock to your system that can affect the rate at which your hair replenishes itself.

Having a baby

When you are pregnant, your body produces hormones that actually make your hair stop falling out; as a result, it may feel even fuller and thicker than normal. However, once you have your baby and your body resets itself to its pre-pregnancy state, you might find the change leads to hair loss.

Taking birth control

Whether you go on off birth control pills, your hormones are going to undergo a change. Because of this change, your hair may fall out as your body tries to adjust and compensate for the different levels of hormones.

While there are a variety of factors that can contribute to hair loss, one thing about it is certain: You may not notice hair loss until three to six months after the trigger stressor occurs. But when you do begin to notice hair loss, you can count on Wig and Hair Solutions to help you stay feeling beautiful and confident.

Alopecia and Hair Loss

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014

Alopecia hair lossThe stylists at Wigs and Hair Solutions have been trained to handle hair loss situations due to a number of reasons. Whether it be from a medical condition or health condition, our stylists are trained to handle any of these situations. One of the common causes of hair loss we see in our salon is Alopecia.

Alopecia is an autoimmune disease that can cause patchy to wide spread hair loss in a patient. The disease commonly occurs in those who have relatives or ancestors that also suffered from the disease. Alopecia occurs in three different forms:

  • Alopecia areata- Hair loss occurs in patches.
  • Alopecia totalis- Hair loss occurs throughout the scalp.
  • Alopecia universalis- Hair loss all over the body.

Hair loss from Alopecia typically begins with patchy, small, smooth, round circles throughout the scalp. For some, the hair loss stops there. For others, this is only the beginning of their hair loss. There are several medications available to help those suffering from Alopecia and the use of a few different medications at a time has shown an increase in hair growth in some patients. The entire process of hair loss and regrowth tends to occur more than once for patients before the disease completely leaves their system. Other patients may never have full re-growth.

For those dealing with hair loss from Alopecia, there is Wigs and Hair Solutions. If you are dealing with full hair loss, our stylists will work with you to create a custom human hair wig that suits your style. If you are only suffering from partial hair loss, we offer human hair toppers and partial pieces that blend in with your natural hair and mask the hair loss. When you walk into our salon, you never have to worry about feeling weird or abnormal because of your hair loss. We believe all women are beautiful, no matter how much hair they have on their head, but we know that having hair will help our clients feel more like themselves.

Chemotherapy and Hair Loss

Chemotherapy

At Wigs and Hair Solutions, we help women through hair loss due to a number of different health and medical reasons. Our job is to help our clients through the process, whatever it may be, and reach a place where they are back to feeling like themselves again. We make sure to understand all of the causes for hair loss so that we may customize our service to meet the client’s needs. One of the more commonly seen causes of hair loss that we see is from chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy is the treatment of cancer through powerful medication. The medicines used to attack the cancer cells unfortunately attack other cells within the body, including those found in your hair roots. This then leads to the loss of hair in patients. The speed and intensity of hair loss varies from patient to patient and depends on the type of medicine being used and its strength. The loss of hair can range from only thinning to losing all hair completely. Most patients can expect hair loss after the first three weeks of treatment. Hair loss can begin gradually with some strands here and there, or quickly in clumps. It’s common for patients to find hair in their brushes, in the drains of their shower, and even on their pillows in the morning. While there is no treatment currently to prevent the loss of hair during chemotherapy, there are some steps patients can take to make the process easier.

Before

  • Cut your hair in a short bob or pixie cut. This will help your hair look fuller during the initial loss and will make the loss less dramatic.
  • Stop any color, perm, or other hair treatments before your chemotherapy. This will help your hair to become stronger before the process begins.
  • Make an appointment at Wigs and Hair Solutions. Talk to one of our stylists about a custom wig during and after your treatment. If your loss is only as severe as thinning, we also offer partial pieces and toppers.

During

  • Continue to be easy on your hair and scalp. Use gentle products like gentle shampoos and a soft bristled brush.
  • Shave the rest of your remaining hair. This will eliminate scalp irritation and will reduce a patchy appearance.
  • Partner with your stylist at Wigs and Hair Solutions to discuss wig options and styles.

After

  • Never stop being gentle with your scalp. If you expect to be exposed to intense temperatures or weather conditions, protect your scalp with your wig or other covering product like a hat or scarf.
  • Be patient with your hair growth. Continue to partner with your stylist at Wigs and Hair Solutions. If you reach a point where a wig is no longer needed, we can discuss partial pieces and toppers with you until your hair is back to where you want it to be.

Confidence with your Custom Wig

Confidence with WigsDistraught. Lost. Alone. Vulnerable. Naked.

When a woman loses her hair from conditions outside of her control, the effects can be devastating. Women who choose to shave their head tend to feel liberated because it was their own choice. But when a woman’s hair is taken from them, almost stolen from them, they feel far from liberated. They feel a loss of confidence and even a loss of self.  There are several health and medical reasons that cause hair loss in women, including:

  1. Chemotherapy
  2. Radiation Treatment
  3. Chemical Damage
  4. Alopecia
  5. Burns and Scars
  6. Drugs, Surgery, Stress

Once their hair is gone, women aren’t sure what to do and how to handle the loss. To some, losing your hair may not seem like such a devastating thing, but to women who aren’t sure when their hair will come back, it can feel like their world is shattering. Hair loss can cause women to feel depressed, unworthy, and ugly. This means women suffering from hair loss don’t want to leave their home or experience life as they previously knew it. But this doesn’t have to be the case.

Women now have the choice of a custom human hair wig while dealing with their hair loss. While the idea of wearing a wig may seem stressful and overwhelming to women, they should know how empowering wearing a wig can be. Women use their hair as a way of expressing themselves. Through different cuts, colors, styles, and accessories, a woman can say a lot about herself by her hair. Wearing a custom wig can allow you to do the same thing while coping with your hair loss. Human hair wigs allow you to feel like yourself again. With a custom wig, you are able to enjoy trips to the salon like you used to. You can go through the motions of deciding on a cut and how to style your hair from day to day. You are able to color your wig and use curling irons as well to customize your wig to suite your needs. With your custom wig, you are able to leave your house with confidence as you face the day ahead. You know you are beautiful, but the sudden loss of hair can take that feeling away from you. Feel beautiful again as you wear your custom human hair wig.

At Wigs and Hair Solutions, we specialize in the customization and maintenance of both synthetic and human hair wigs. Owner Bonnie Grauer is a 9 year cancer survivor who understands just what you are going through while dealing with hair loss. You will never feel rushed or judged when you enter our salon and you will leave with the confidence you deserve.

Summer Styling for your Wig

Summer Wig Styles

Previously we discussed how to best maintain your wig during the summer months. One of the ways we suggested to keep cool while wearing your wig this summer is to style your wig. It may not seem like it, but there are several ways to get in the summer spirit with your customizable wig.

  1. Cuts- Cutting your wig into a shorter style is a great way to keep cool while looking great this summer. A bob will keep your neck open to allow air circulation while looking natural.
  2. Color- If you’re looking to keep your current length, but still change up your wig look, try dying your wig for the summer. Color will depend on several things like the type of wig you have, your skin and eye color, and how drastic you wish to go. Colors that are expected to be popular this season include bright reds, bombshell blondes, and even pastels.
  3. Up-Do- If you wish to change your look without actually changing your wig, try several up-dos with your wig. Start by attempting a simple bun or pony tail using smooth hair elastics. Avoid hair ties that include a metal clasp, this will snag and damage your wig. Take your time and comb your hair slowly while attempting an up-do. Once you have gotten used to styling your wig, branch out and attempt different braids and twists. Check out Pinterest and YouTube to find tutorials on wig up-dos.

If you are wondering about how to style your wig for this summer season, turn to the professionals at Wigs and Hair Solutions. Our stylists are trained to style and maintain wigs for women suffering from hair loss due to an array of health and medical reasons. If you wish to change your wig for the summer season but aren’t sure how to do so, ask one of our qualified stylists. Let us know about your lifestyle during the summer months and we will help find a wig and style that is right for you.
