According to the American Hair Loss Association, as many as 5% of women under 30 and 60% of women older than 70 are affected by genetic hair loss. Androgenetic alopecia is the most common form of female hair loss. It can begin any time after puberty and typically occurs before the age of 40. In order to stand up to anything, one must first learn to understand it. If you’ve been diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia, here’s what you should know.
What it Looks Like
Women diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia, or AGA, typically have increased thinning or diffuse hair loss all over their body. It’s most noticeable at the part line and top area just behind the bangs. The hair can fall out rapidly in chunks, or slowly over time.
AGA causes the follicles to become sensitive to hormones, or androgens that already exist in the body. The androgen receptors, consequently, produce less hair, and the growing cycle is interrupted, resulting in thinning hair.
How it’s Caused
If members of your family have had AGA, you are at greater risk of developing it yourself. Although the condition is genetic, the unique nature of each case forces each woman to determine the specific cause. Numerous blood tests can be done to determine the cause and you may discover that other hormonal changes are the answer. Consult your doctor before taking any further measures with your AGA.
