Radiation and Hair Loss: How Can I Feel Like Myself Again?

radiation-hair-loss

Rebuilding self-esteem while undergoing radiation treatment is extremely therapeutic while going through this devastating time.

Losing hair can be an emotional experience for anyone, especially those who are going through radiation treatment. It is very common for patients of radiation treatment to experience hair loss. You may feel like you’ve lost who you used to be and feel your confidence dwindling. Being diagnosed with cancer and going through radiation treatment is difficult enough, without having to worry you appearence, as well. Wigs and Hair Solutions is here to help you look and feel as beautiful as ever, even while dealing with radiation and hair loss.

Why Radiation Causes Hair Loss

During chemotherapy, hair follicles are damaged because of the drugs used, which causes hair to fall out. With radiation therapy, the damage to your hair is a bit different. If getting radiation to your head, hair loss is very common. You may lose the hair on your head, eyebrows, and eyelashes (some patients lose all three). Often times, instead of the hair loss process being gradual, the hair falls out in large clumps while shampooing or brushing. In many cases, those who are being treated with radiation will grow their hair back once the treatment is over. However, the hair might not be the same as it was before. It usually grows back with a different texture and is often thinner.  Unfortunately, with some patients of radiation therapy, their hair will hardly grow back at all once the treatment is over.

What The Patient Can Do

It’s normal to feel upset over hair loss. While going through radiation treatment, it can be hard to grasp that there is really nothing that can be done to prevent your hair from falling out. While there is nothing that you can do to prevent hair loss, there is something that you can do to fix the problem. If you’re thinking about investing in a wig, make sure to buy one before your treatment begins. That way, you will hardly be able to notice that your real hair is falling out because you already have a backup head of hair! With a wig, your confidence and self-esteem will be as high as ever, even during your radiation treatment.
