Female pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, affects women of all ages. It’s the leading cause of hair loss in both sexes, but it affects women and men differently. Women with androgenetic alopecia do not experience receding hairlines. Instead, hair loss begins with gradual thinning at the part line and follows by increased diffused hair loss starting at the top of the head.
Who is at Risk?
Female pattern baldness affects over 30 million women in the United States. Globally, 50% of women over the age of 65 experience some symptoms. While it most commonly affects women in their 50s and 60s, teenagers and women in their early twenties can experience early-onset androgenetic alopecia.
Why Does it Occur?
Medical experts have not clearly defined the cause of female pattern baldness, but there are a few possible contributing factors. For example, an increased level of androgens in the hair follicle may shorten the natural cycle of growth. A decreased hair growth cycle causes the hair follicle to shrink over time, and eventually, growth stops completely. Other contributing factors include genes and fluctuating estrogen levels.
How Fast Does Hair Loss Occur?
Female pattern hair loss tends to occur slower than other forms of hair loss, but the rate can vary. While some women experience noticeable hair loss, some only experience slight thinning. A variety of other factors could allow the androgenetic alopecia to progress quickly, such as diet or illness.
