Hair Loss and The Power of Empathy

Practicing empathy is an essential aspect of coping with hair loss.

Practicing empathy is an essential aspect of coping with hair loss.

Although hair loss is a common occurrence, some women experience isolation and even depression when they begin to lose their hair. In Brene Brown’s Ted Talk on empathy, she explains, “empathy fuels connection, [while] sympathy drives disconnection.” Practicing empathy is an essential aspect of coping with hair loss.

Empathy and Hair Loss

Unfortunately, many women experiencing hair loss have reported feelings of disconnection and misunderstanding with their friends, family, or even doctors. Not only are these women experiencing the loss of their hair, but they aren’t getting the emotional support necessary from the people around them. Sometimes the only thing that a woman experiencing hair loss needs is a listening, patient ear.

What is Empathy?

Empathy is defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. It differs from sympathy, which is characterized by feelings of pity and sorrow for someone else’s misfortune. In Brown’s talk, she describes empathy as listening intently to another for the purpose of understanding that person. She describes sympathy as a person saying “oh, that sucks– do you want a sandwich?”

Why is It Important?

Now, more than ever, people are stressing the importance of empathy. Listening to another and understanding his/her pain is proven to increase productivity at work and happiness at home.
