Seasonal Hair Loss and Excessive Shedding

Are you experiencing seasonal hair loss?

Are you experiencing seasonal hair loss?

Some women report hair loss and excessive shedding during Autumn and early Winter, but experts say that this condition is most likely temporary. Read on to learn more about seasonal hair loss, and discover how you can handle it with the following tips!

Transitioning from Summer to Fall

Our bodies experience drastic changes as the temperature drops and the daylight decreases. One of the most common side effects of the changing weather is seasonal depression, but the effects can take a toll on our hair as well. Allure Magazine interviewed a dermatologist about seasonal hair loss to get the facts. “In the late summer months, we hang on to more hair to provide increased protection from the sun,” the doctor informed Allure, “A few months after… those hairs that we held onto during the summer will make a transition into the shed phase.”

Check the Facts

Some hair loss is natural and by 50 years of age, half of all women will experience some degree of hair shedding. There are multiple reasons why a woman’s hair falls out, but experts agree that seasonal hair loss is not a permanent condition. During a recent study, women were shown to have the most hair on their head during the months of July and April. The natural growth cycle of hair dictates that women will lose hair and gain it back throughout the year.

What Can Women Do?

Hair loss is natural, but there are certain steps you can take to strengthen your natural hair during the winter months. Consider using a deep conditioning mask to keep the hair hydrated, and maintain a healthy diet throughout the year to promote good hair health. If you find that your hair loss is noticeable, consider wearing a wig or hair topper until your hair returns to full growth.
