Hair loss can be a distressing and traumatic time for the person experiencing it. Whether her hair loss is as a result of breast cancer treatments or a mental disorder, she needs an empathetic shoulder to lean on through hard times. Here are four ways you can support your loved one as she battles her hair loss.
Sit & Listen
Traumatic experiences, such as hair loss and causes of hair loss, require a listening ear and a gentle presence. Your loved one doesn’t need you to tell her that it’s going to be O.K. Rather, she needs you to sit and listen to her as she attempts to make sense of the experience. An empathetic ear is one of the most crucial tools in hair loss support.
Leave Judgements Aside
If your loved one’s hair loss is self-inflicted, or as a result of a traumatic experience, leave your opinions at the door. Offering medical or professional advice is appropriate, but offering your judgment is not.
Avoid The Silver Lining
If you want to be a truly empathetic friend, avoid giving the silver lining at all cost. Making statements such as “at least you still have some of your hair” or “at least you have a strong support system” implies that your loved one is not facing a hard battle. Don’t devalue her struggle with the silver lining.
Take Care Of You, Too
At any time in your life when you find yourself acting as the support system for another, make sure you take care of yourself as well. Be aware of your own level of distress, energy, and desire for support. The support you give is only as strong as you are, after all.
