Cancer Facts Women Should Know: Part Two

Cancer FactsLast week we began discussing the different types of cancers that tend to affect women the most. While many cancers can affect both men and women, there are some that are only experienced by women and others that tend to affect women more often than men. Cancer facts will help women know the symptoms of these cancers as well as know how to prevent these cancers. Last week, we talked about ovarian, breast, and colon cancer facts. This week, we will focus on cervical, endometrial, and lung cancer facts.

Cervical Cancer Facts

This type of cancer can affect a woman who is or has been sexually active and have contracted the human papilloma virus. The best way to prevent the cancer is to have a Pap test conducted to help detect treatable changes in the cervix before cancer can form. The following is recommended by the American Cancer Society:

  • Begin testing no sooner than the age of 21.
  • Women from the ages of 21 to 29 should have a test conducted every 3 years. The HPV test should then be conducted if an abnormal test occurs.
  • Women from the ages of 30 to 65 should have both a Pap and HPV test conducted every 3 years.

Endometrial Cancer Facts

This type of cancer is found within the lining of the uterus. It most often occurs in women who are over the age of 50. Those that are at an increased risk of the cancer are:

  • Women taking tamoxifen as a breast cancer treatment
  • Those who have experienced early menstrual periods
  • Those who have experienced menopause late
  • Women who have a history of infertility

Lung Cancer Facts

While those who smoke are at a much higher risk for lung cancer, even those who have never touched a cigarette can find themselves facing the disease. The best way to prevent lung cancer is to not smoke and live a healthy lifestyle. If persistent coughing or chest pain occurs, see a health professional for testing.
