Common Hair Loss Myths & Rumors

Are you experiencing hair loss? Get the facts, first!

Every case of hair loss is unique to the person experiencing it. That’s why proper diagnosis is necessary when establishing a course of action to take once your hair does begin to shed. About 40-50% of women are affected by hair thinning, and in order to treat the problem, those affected need to seek the opinion of a professional. It’s tough enough to experience hair loss, and certain myths and rumors can sometimes stand in your way.

MYTH: Supplements Support Hair Growth
TRUTH: Although some supplements have anecdotal support and are basically harmless to try, there is limited research that proves one pill will regrow your hair. That being said, taking something to promote your general well-being can be used to support the hair you still have.

MYTH: Over-washing Your Hair Causes Thinning
TRUTH: “You’re just cleansing the scalp, and that’s not going to affect the root,” says Paradi Mirmirani, MD, a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. Those strands of hair you find clumped up in the shower drain have likely come to the end of their lifecycle, so the washing cycle is only getting rid of the materials that have already come lose.

MYTH: Hair Thinning Is A Result Of Old Age
TRUTH: The truth is, you’re never too young to start losing your hair. Hair thinning is chronic, progressive, and can be caused by many different reasons.

MYTH: You’ll Lose Your Hair If Your Parents Did
TRUTH: If hair loss runs in your family, you’re generally more likely to inherit it. That being said, hair loss is polygenetic, which means that your fate is decided by a random assortment of genes from immediate and extended relatives.

MYTH: Birth Control Causes Hair Loss
TRUTH: There is some truth to this, unfortunately, but not all of contraceptives have the same chemical makeup. If you’re concerned about the possibility of hair loss, your doctor can recommend a form of birth control that won’t affect that part of your body.
