There are many different causes of hair loss, including infectious agents. In this week’s blog, we’re discussing three common forms of infection-related conditions that contribute to female hair loss.
Ringworm is a fungal infection that can occur anywhere on the body, but will cause hair loss if it occurs on the person’s scalp. This is known to doctors as “tinea capitis”. It typically begins as a small pimple that progressively expands in size, leaving scaly patches of temporary baldness. The fungus affects the hair fibers in the affected area and the hairs become brittle and break off. The affected areas are often itchy, red, and inflamed.
Treatment varies depending on the particular fungus involved. Some forms of ringworm will go away unexpectedly without treatment, but some forms will need an antifungal prescription.
This is a term for inflammation of hair follicles. At first sight, folliculitis looks like acne with tiny rings of inflammation surrounding the opening of a hair follicle. As it progresses, folliculitis causes the hair to fall out. Severe forms of folliculitis can even cause permanent hair loss.
Piedra, or trichomycosis nodularis, occurs when the hair fibers are infected by fungus. There are two types of piedra: black and white (referring the color of the nodules formed on the hair fiber). Black piedra is due to the fungus Piedraia hortae and is found mostly in tropical countries while white piedra is due to Trichosporon beigelii and is found mostly in Europe and Southern parts of the United States.
