Determine the cause of your stress and take action.

Life’s challenges are never presented to us at convenient times. They arrive in overwhelming bundles of mismanaged clutter, and it’s your job to untangle the mess. Whether you’re dealing with an increased workload, a divorce, or a sick family member, the stress can take a toll on you both mentally and physically. This week we’re discussing how stress can lead to hair loss, and what to do when it happens.

Telogen Effluvium

Stress-induced hair loss is characterized as telogen effluvium. Any kind of physical trauma, severe illness, or stressful incident can trigger this form of hair loss. In most cases stress induced hair loss in temporary, and will grow back once you’ve returned to a healed mental state.

The hair growth cycle occurs in phases, which is why your hair loss may occur even if you’ve already come to terms with your stress. A significant stress can cause a disproportionate number of hairs to go into the resting phase at the same time. When stress-induced hair loss occurs, the resting hairs fall out and new growth cannot occur for several weeks or even months.

What You Can Do

If you haven’t healed mentally, you should consider taking the necessary steps towards relaxing your mind and regaining control over your stressful life.

Meditating for even a few minutes a day has been proven to relax the mind. You might not have the luxury of spending a day at the spa, but you can close your eyes for a few minutes to an hour and allow yourself to indulge in a relaxed state.

All forms of exercise can help ease anxiety and stress. Your brain releases endorphins during exercise that make you happy! If meditation isn’t your thing, spend 30 minutes to an hour a day outside jogging or playing sports.
