What is Telogen Effluvium?

Learn more about Telogen Effluvium.

This form of hair loss occurs when sudden or severe stress causes an increase in the shedding of hair. A traumatic event can cause hair follicles to prematurely stop growing and enter into a resting phase. The hairs affected by Telogen Effluvium remain in the resting phase for about three months after which they will begin to shed. This particular hair loss is temporary in most cases however, sometimes the hair loss continues until the underlying cause is resolved.

Ways It Can Develop

The first way that Telogen Effluvium can develop is an environmental insult that shocks the growing hair follicles so much that they go into the resting phase of the hair cycle for an extended period of time. The form of TE develops rapidly and the hair loss can start within a few weeks of the incident.

The second form of TE develops slowly and persists longer than the first. The hair loss process is more gradual as the hair follicles don’t shed immediately. Instead, the follicles may enter a resting state as they normally would, but instead of returning to a new anagen hair growing state after a month or two, they stay in their telogen state for a prolonged period of time.

Risk Factors

Any physical stressor or trauma that can disrupt hormone levels in the body can trigger telogen effluvium hair loss. Examples of risk factors include pregnancy, childbirth, malnutrition, a surgical procedure, a traumatic event, and even jetlag. This means that TE can be triggered by a traumatic event such as a sudden death or a stressful experience such as extended travel.

Treatment of TE

The treatment for Telogen Effluvium depends on how it was caused. Overcoming a traumatic experience, relieving stress, or a change in diet are a few ways that the natural hair cycle can begin again. Consult your doctor if you believe you are experiencing symptoms of TE.
