Thinning hair? Radiology Treatment? Chemical damage? Whatever the reason for your hair loss, choosing the right wig can be an invigorating experience, especially once you’ve learned of your alopecia for the first time. The right wig will give you the self-esteem to face the world head-on, and here at Wigs and Solutions, it’s our goal to bring back that backbone! The initial hair loss period is extremely overwhelming and mortifying for many women in your shoes. Once you’ve chosen a style that fits your look and has you feeling yourself again, knowing how to care for it will keep its shining luster for years to come. We’ll take you through a simplified step-by-step process on wig cleaning this week.
Using a wide tooth comb, gently detangle the strands of your delicate new wigs. Note that it’s extremely important not to aggressively brush. Doing so will have your wig falling apart strand by strand. If you come across a problem area, use a spray detangler or conditioner while gently combing through the area.
Step 2- Rinse
Your wig should always be rinsed from root to end. Using lukewarm water, so you don’t scorch the delicate locks, make sure you never soak the hair as well. This could lead to irreversible tangling. If you decided on a curly look, leaving the hair net around during the rinsing step will keep those curls bouncing.
Step 3- Shampoo
Gently work shampoo through your wig, evenly. Make sure to work shampoo through all areas, including the cap. Use circular motions on the cap specifically, as this sits atop the head and will accumulate oils from the skin.
Step 4- Condition
Detangling your wig will make it last much longer. If not taken care of properly, the hair will often mat and combing through it is impossible without breaking strands off the cap. For synthetic hair, spray leave-in conditioner from the mid-shaft to the ends, avoiding the roots will keep them from splitting. Human hair conditioning is a bit different. You’re going to want to leave the conditioner in for a few minutes before rinsing. Like with synthetic wigs, do not apply conditioner to the roots of a human hair wig either. If your wig starts to look dry, or damaged, using a deep conditioner will have it looking luscious in no time.
Step 5- Rinse Again
Use lukewarm water again in the direction that the hair of your wig naturally flows. This avoids additional tangling, which I’m sure you don’t want after spending so much time conditioning it. Air dry it a bit by pressing a towel against it. You never want to wring it out to get rid of excess moisture. This will weaken the strands and cause breakage.
Step 6- Dry
The final step of your novice wig cleaning guidelines is to dry your new pride and joy. For synthetic wigs, placing them on a folding wig stand to air dry will have them bouncing, voluminous and flowing the next day. To dry human hair, however, you’ll want to blow dry it at about 80% with a round brush. It is extremely important to use a brush. Without one, over time, tangling will lead to matted hair.
