Chemical Damage to Hair and Hair Loss

Hair loss can occur from chemical damage. If it’s too late, Wigs and Hair Solutions can help!

The continued, consistent use of hair straighteners, blow dryers, curling irons, and other hot styling tools combined with perming, bleaching, and dyeing may cause you to physically start losing hair. By far the most common cause of hair loss, over processing will significantly affect the integrity of hair fiber. The weaker your hair fiber gets, the less and less it will grow. Often times, it gets so weak that hair will actually start to fall off. While frequently changing your hairstyle and color can be extremely fun and exciting, preventative measures should be taken to do so in moderation. Chemical Damage to hair and hair loss can be tough to accept. Luckily, there are solutions for you if your crown is already thinning out a bit too much.

How Does Chemical Damage Cause Hair Loss?

We have fibers in each strand of hair. The hair cuticle is the very strong outer sleeve of dead keratinized cells that overlap each other along the length of the hair fiber. Protecting the softer inner cortex of the fiber, the cuticle cells become damaged and start to flake with too much processing. In  order for the processes of perming, coloring, or dyeing to work, the chemicals involved must penetrate the hair cuticle to rearrange the chemical bonds in hair structure. If the chemicals used to penetrate the cuticle are applied for too long, in high concentration, the cuticle will be irreversibly damaged or stripped away completely. This where breakage occurs. A chemical cut, if you will. It is possible to over process your hair so much that the hair fibers are weakened to the point of severe root weakening as well. If this happens, hair may break off from the scalp itself.

Be Nice to Your Hair

Serious root damage can occur from physical maltreatment as well. Aggressive brushing, and back combing put a lot of stress on those roots! Beating your hair up with a brush combined with frequent blow drying will cause hair loss as well. ‘Bubble hair’ is the process by moisture gets trapped within the hair fiber and expands when blow drying. Overtime, bubble hair and aggressive brushing/combing combined with chemical damage will have your roots packing up and skipping town. Treat your hair nicely, and it will stay with you forever.
