There are a variety of elements that could lead to stress and anxiety. A demanding job, traumatic experience and chronic depression are just a few examples, but there is no one determining factor. If you’re unsure of the cause of your recent hair loss, read on to learn if stress could be the reason.
Causes of Stress-Induced Hair Loss
Hair loss that occurs as a result of stress doesn’t happen immediately. Rather, the stressful event forces hair to enter a dormant state, and so shedding doesn’t occur until two to three months after the period of high stress. Below are three conditions related to stress-induced hair loss.
- Alopecia Areata. This condition is characterized by the loss of large clumps of hair around the scalp. If it is stress-related, it occurs months after the incident and the hair loss is rapid.
- Telogen Effluvium. Similar to alopecia areata, telogen effluvium occurs months after the period of high stress. Hair begins to thin gradually, and the condition worsens until the hair is very thin or the scalp is nearly bald.
- Trichotillomania. Caused by intense stress and anxiety, trichotillomania results when a person pulls their hair out subconsciously.
Every Experience is Different
Although there are a few conditions specifically related to stress-induced hair loss, it’s important to understand that every experience is different. Not all hair loss is anxiety related, and some women feel stress simply because they are starting to lose their hair. Before seeking treatment, talk to a doctor about your specific symptoms.
Not all stress-induced hair loss is permanent. Some conditions can be corrected when you start to reduce anxiety and stress in your life. Seek the help of a professional, and consider wearing a hair topper or wig while your natural hair reverts to its cycle of growth.
