What is Trichotillomania?

stress symptoms hair loss

Trichotillomania is a serious condition that can be treated.

Trichotillomania is a body-focused repetitive behavior classified as an impulse control disorder. Women who suffer from trichotillomania have an irresistible urge to pull out their hair, typically from the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes. It’s estimated that 1%-2% of adults and adolescents suffer from trichotillomania. Generally, this is a chronic condition that will come and go throughout one’s life if left untreated.

There is no certain cause of trichotillomania, but it’s currently identified as a medical illness. It may be related to abnormalities in brain pathways that link areas involved in emotional regulation and impulse control.

Depression and anxiety have also been linked with trichotillomania and the disorder is slightly more likely if it runs in the family.

  • Recurrent pulling out of hair, resulting in noticeable hair loss
  • An increasing sense of tension before pulling out one’s hair followed by an immediate sense of gratification when hair has been pulled out.
  • Repeated attempts to decrease the amount of hair being pulled out
  • Significant social distress, such as loss of control, embarrassment, or shame may lead someone who suffers from trichotillomania to purposely miss work or school

Complications and Prevention

Infection, skin damage and permanent hair loss are all possible complications with this condition. Incessant pulling out of hair from the scalp, eyelashes, and eyebrows can lead to irritation of the skin that could be permanently uncomfortable.  Much like other causes of hair loss, permanent hair loss can lead to issues with a person’s self-esteem or body image.

While there is currently no proven way to prevent Trichotillomania, a person suffering from this condition can seek specific treatments. Behavioral therapy targeted to reverse the habit of pulling hair and practicing stress management are both ways to get relief from Trichotillomania.
