The “Alopecia is Fashion” Campaign Gives Women with Hair Loss a Platform

Earlier this week, the “Alopecia is Fashion” movement was launched in efforts to make hair loss more accepted and visible in the fashion industry. The hashtag #alopeciaisfashion was created to connect women around the globe through social media, and to give a platform to models with hair loss.

What is Alopecia Areata?

Alopecia areata is a common autoimmune skin disease, affecting more than 6.8 million people in the U.S. The condition causes hair loss on the scalp, face, and often other areas of the body. It affects people of all genders, health, and ages. Children as young as 0-5 have been reported with cases of alopecia areata.

Alopecia areata is the most common form of alopecia. In some cases, individuals with alopecia experience a few bald spots throughout the scalp. In other cases, alopecia areata causes total baldness.

The #alopeciaisfashion campaign features a series of photographs of two British models with Alopecia. “Seeing others look beautiful and strong will show others that they can do the same,” one model said in a statement. “We’re all so quick to judge ourselves compared to others. Why not just embrace it?” Both models and activists hope to inspire more people with alopecia to feel confident in their own skin.

You can participate in the movement! Use the hashtag #alopeciaisfashion to connect with women all over the globe through Instagram, Twitter, and other forms of social media.
