Discover what to expect regarding hair loss and breast cancer treatment.

Discover what to expect regarding hair loss and breast cancer treatment.

According to a recent study, an estimated 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in the United States, as well as 63,960 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer. If you are preparing to undergo chemotherapy treatment, it’s important to know what lies ahead. Discover what to expect regarding hair loss and breast cancer treatment.

Why Hair Loss Occurs

The Mayo Clinic defines chemotherapy as “powerful medications that attack rapidly growing cancer cells.” Unfortunately for cancer patients, chemotherapy drugs also attack other healthy cells in your body, such as the hair roots. The rate of hair loss depends on a variety of factors, and it affects each patient differently as a result. Hair loss can occur all over the body, but most commonly occurs on the scalp and face.

What to Expect

Typically, hair begins to fall out two to four weeks after treatment begins. You may lose the hair in large clumps, or the hair loss could be more gradual. You may notice more hair in your brush or the shower drain and your scalp may feel sensitive to the touch. Women with chemotherapy-induced hair loss commonly experience emotional symptoms as well. This is the time to seek the help of a friend, professional, or wig specialist.

Plan Ahead

The best way to handle chemotherapy hair loss is to make plans before treatment begins. Avoid bleaching, coloring, or perming your hair as this can weaken the follicles. Consider air drying after a shower to avoid excess heat, and avoid curling or straightening your hair. Consider cutting your hair a shorter length to make the transition easier, and start planning for ways to cover your hair (if you wish to do so).
