Differentiating Hair Loss From Hair Shedding

You need to determine if you’re experiencing hair loss or hair shedding.

Have you noticed clumps of hair in the shower drain? Maybe you’ve counted more hair in your paddle brush than usual. Before you jump to conclusions, you need to determine if you’re experiencing hair loss or hair shedding. Yes, there is a difference between the two– let’s explore.

Hair Shedding

While it’s normal to shed between 50-100 hairs a day, the body might experience excessive shedding at one time or another. Excessive shedding, known as telogen effluvium, occurs when there is a sudden change in the number of hair follicles growing hair. It can occur at any time, although it’s more commonly reported in people who have lost a considerable amount of weight, experienced stressful situations, or who have fallen ill.

The excessive shedding stops as the body readjusts, typically within 6-12 months. However if the person is unable to regain mental stability during that time, the shedding may continue.

Hair Loss

Hair loss occurs when growth comes to a complete halt. Also known as anagen effluvium, common causes of hair loss include hereditary hair loss, immune system deficiencies, overstyling, chemotherapy, and mental illness. Hair loss differs from hair shedding because it’s often permanent, and hair loss does not begin again unless the primary cause is corrected. For example, if a person is experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy, she will most likely experience hair growth once the treatment stops.
