If you’re amongst the many women battling cancer, the thought of chemotherapy can be a daunting premise. It helps to ready yourself, and understand what you can expect to experience during this time. Discover how to prepare for the possibility of hair loss with the following tips.
Hair Loss & Chemotherapy
Alopecia is a common side effect of chemotherapy or other forms of cancer treatment. The drugs are designed to destroy rapidly dividing cells associated with cancer growth quickly. Unfortunately, the drugs also attack healthy cells, such as the cells that promote hair growth.
What to Expect
Hair loss begins to occur two to three weeks after the first dosage of chemotherapy. While some women lose their hair gradually, others experience immediate hair loss. The hair may fall out slowly or in large clumps when you shower or brush.
Taking Care of Your Hair
During chemotherapy, it’s recommended that you be gentle with your hair when you style or wash it. Use a mild shampoo in the shower, and avoid excessive stylings such as braids or tight ballerina buns. Consider cutting your hair short before chemotherapy begins in order to make the transition easier.
Does it Hurt?
Some women have experienced itching and a sensation known as “scalp pain” during chemotherapy-related hair loss. These feelings tend to last only a few days, although it can depend on the patient.
Your hair will start to grow back once chemotherapy treatments are over. Some women experience immediate hair growth, while others report hair growth after one month or two.
