Anxiety is a common symptom of hair loss, but were you aware that it can also be a cause? The common disorder can lead to numerous physical symptoms that can affect nearly every part of one’s body, from your organs to your scalp. Discover how stress and anxiety lead to hair loss, and what you can do to stop it.

Anxiety Induced Hair Loss

Common symptoms of anxiety include nervousness, increased heart rate, rapid breathing, sweating, trembling, and trouble concentrating. Many of these symptoms can also be characterized as stress, which is the key issue between anxiety and hair loss. Stress resulting from anxiety can cause the following types of hair loss:

A body-focused repetitive behavior classified as an impulse disorder, trichotillomania involves pulling out one’s hair. It can occur in any region of the body, from the eyebrows to the scalp. It’s estimated that fewer than 2% of adults and adolescents suffer from trichotillomania.

Alopecia Areata

Characterized as large clumps of hair in areas around the scalp, alopecia areata is caused by a disruption in the natural hair cycle.

Telogen Effluvium

Much like alopecia areata, telogen effluvium is caused by a disruption in the hair cycle. However, this form of hair loss typically results from a stressful situation or experience, “shocking” the natural cycle of hair into a resting phase.

How to Reduce Anxiety

In many cases, reducing anxiety will allow for the hair growth cycle to start naturally again. You can achieve emotional stability by talking to a professional, seeking the comfort of a friend, and exercising daily. Talk to a doctor about ways to reduce the anxiety you experience in your everyday life.
