Understanding Female Pattern Baldness

Female pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss in women.

Recently, fitness blogger, Kayla Itsines, opened up about her fight with female pattern baldness. “My natural hair is actually super short,” the 26-year-old told her 7 million followers. “I have genetically thin hair (my grandma and [mom] both have really thin hair as does a lot in my family) I often just wear a clip-in ponytail when I want long hair. I have a family history of female baldness… I am at peace with it and I will not let it rule my life.” Her story is a welcome reminder that women battle with pattern baldness, contrary to the opinion that it affects only men.

What is Female Pattern Baldness?

Female pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss in women. It occurs when the natural hair cycle is interrupted, and new hair doesn’t grow in place of the old. This disruption leads to thinning hair, brittle hair, and balding on the scalp.

Why Does it Occur?

There are several common causes of female pattern baldness including aging, menopause, and family history. If a woman’s mother, father, or another member of the family has experienced female pattern baldness, then she is more likely to develop it. Changes in the levels of androgens can also cause pattern baldness.

What are the Symptoms?

When female pattern baldness occurs, hair begins to start thinning on the top and crown of the scalp. It typically starts with a widening through the center hair part. Contrary to male pattern hair loss, the hair loss rarely progresses to total baldness.
