Breast Cancer Awareness: Breast Cancer Myths

Breast-Cancer In honor of breast cancer awareness beginning in October, we thought we would help to bring awareness to the potentially fatal cancer. Breast cancer is one of the more well-known cancers that affect women each year, but there are still myths that surround the cancer that need clarifying.

Myth– A lump on your breast means you have breast cancer.

Truth– While a lump on your breast should never ignored, only a small percent of lumps are cancerous. It’s important to conduct routine breast exams to be aware of irregularities or changes in case there is a serious problem.

Myth– A mammogram can force breast cancer to spread because of the compression.

Truth– The pressure of a mammogram cannot cause cancer to spread. A mammogram is still the best way to detect breast cancer early, so this myth should never deter anyone from having an exam performed. The National Cancer Institute states that “The benefits of mammography, however, nearly always outweigh the potential harm from the radiation exposure. Mammograms require very small doses of radiation. The risk of harm from this radiation exposure is extremely low.”

Myth– Women with a family history of breast cancer will suffer from the cancer as well.

Truth– While having a family member who has suffered from the cancer can increase your risks of having it as well; it does not mean you are guaranteed to be diagnosed. In fact, only 10% of those diagnosed have a family history of breast cancer.

Myth– Breast cancer can be contagious.

Truth– Breast cancer occurs when there is an uncontrolled growth of mutated cells in the breast tissue, which cannot be transferred or caught by another individual.
