Hair Loss and What to Expect with Cancer Treatment

For those who are soon beginning cancer treatment, it can be a scary time. You may not know what to expect, and be worried about the outcome. However, treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy are proven to be effective against cancer cells and tumors. Try not to focus on worrying during this time, but instead on getting better.Causes for Hair Loss

It’s still perfectly normal to want to know what to expect, however, especially when it comes to changes such as hair loss. Let us give you a little serenity by preparing you on some things to expect. Keep in mind, everyone’s body is different, and no cancer treatment journey is the same. However, it’s still nice to know what may lie ahead.

What to expect from: Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy attacks cancer cells via drugs which are either injected into the vein, shot into muscle, applied as an ointment, or taken orally. There may be some side effects of this cancer treatment which vary depending on the person, and may include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Hair loss
  • General malaise

Don’t let these possible side effects scare you, however. The treatment does a lot of good to help you recover, and there are solutions to the side effects, such as wigs for hair loss.

What to expect from: Radiation

Some people are surprised to learn radiation and chemotherapy are not the same cancer treatment. Radiation uses waves to destroy cancer cells, and is usually a targeted treatment that can be done individually or in combination with other treatments. The possible side effects are similar to chemotherapy, however may be more targeted to the area of radiation, such as skin rashes.

It’s important to remember stress and not looking after your wellbeing both mentally and physically can also cause these side effects, even for someone without cancer! So try to be positive when beginning your treatment. When dealing with side effects such as hair loss, you can seek peace of mind with Bonnie Grauer of Wigs and Hair Solutions.
