Understanding Alopecia Areata

Alopecia-AreataA commonly found cause of hair loss in our salon is alopecia areata. While the term might be heard every now and again, few people understand what the words mean and how to react. Hair loss that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the follicles of hair is referred to as alopecia areata. When this occurs, the loss is not always permanent, but specialists are still unsure as to why the loss occurs. While alopecia areata is most commonly found in those under the age of twenty, the hair loss is known to affect women and men of any age.

When an individual begins to experience alopecia areata, they tend to find round clumps of hair falling at once, which will then result in a completely bare and smooth area of the scalp. There are also times when the hair doesn’t fall out completely, but instead break off or become extremely thin. The hair that falls out tends to regrow within several months. While it normally grows back the same texture and color as before, there are times when the hair can grow back white and thin. While the hair does typically regrow, about 10 percent of those who experience the hair loss will experience permanent hair loss.

Permanent hair loss due to alopecia areata is more likely to become permanent if the following is true:

  • You have a history of alopecia areata within your family
  • You tend to experience abnormalities with your nails, both toes and fingers
  • You are suffering from a different autoimmune disease
  • You have experienced alopecia areata before the age of puberty, or for more than a year’s time
  • You have experienced large amounts of hair loss
