Oftentimes, the people that love us withhold information as a way to protect us from harm. This is the case in too many cancer patients whose doctors and friends kept them in the dark about their chemotherapy-induced hair loss. While it’s true that some chemotherapy treatments have no effect on the patient’s hair, others can cause severe and seemingly immediate effects. The best way to combat hair loss caused by chemotherapy is to know the facts and to enter your journey prepared.
WHY AM I GOING TO LOSE MY HAIR?
The drugs used in chemotherapy attack the cancer cells that are rapidly growing inside of your body. Unfortunately, these drugs attack other rapidly growing cells in your body such as your hair roots. You may experience hair loss all over your body, from your scalp to your pubic area. The amount of hair that you will lose depends on the dosage and form of chemotherapy.
WHAT EXACTLY IS GOING TO HAPPEN?
You should begin to experience hair loss anywhere from two to four weeks after your treatment begins. The rate in which your hair falls out depends entirely on you and your specific chemotherapy. It could fall out very quickly in clumps or it could become gradually thinner over time. Many patients prefer to shave his or her head at the first signs of hair loss. It’s up to you. Some patients view the process of allowing his or her hair to fall out until bald as unnecessarily painful.
CAN I PREVENT IT?
You may read in some places that there are ways to reverse this hair loss, but the best way is to endure until your chemotherapy sessions end. Typically, hair begins to grow back once your sessions have been completed.
WHAT CAN I DO?
Learn more about wig styling, purchase a head wrap, and keep your head warm during the cold months with a hat or scarf. Consider this an opportunity to try new styles you may not have ever dared to try before. Cancer sucks, but you can still look beautiful while battling it.
