Winter Maintenance Tips for your Wig

winter-maintenanceWhile many of us are enjoying the fall weather and the break from the summer weather, others know that winter weather is just around the corner. Cold weather brings snow, ice, and wind which can be harsh on the skin and hair, especially those who wear wigs. In order to prevent your wig from becoming damaged during the upcoming winter months, consider these tips for caring for your wig.

The first thing to keep in mind when protecting your wigs during the winter is to maintain moisture. Like natural hair, a lack of moisture can cause the hair fibers of the wig to become brittle, which can make the wig more vulnerable to damage. Look for wig-specific conditioners to use during the colder months to help lock moisture into your wig and prevent breakage and other damage.

If you decide to wash and rinse your wig, be sure to have it completely dry before you head outside. Wearing a wet or damp wig in cold weather could leave the strands of hair vulnerable to freezing and breaking, which can leave your wig looking frizzy and uneven while also causing irreplaceable damage to the wig. To avoid this issue, try to wash your wig in the evening or on a day you can stay in to provide enough time for the wig to air dry.

If you must head out in windy or icy weather, be sure to wear a hat or scarf in order to protect your wig. Wind and ice can both cause damage to the strands of hair on the wig, which can make brushing and other maintenance difficult.

Keeping your wig free of tangles is also another way to keep your wig protected and looking healthy. Use a detangler for wigs and a wide tooth comb to gently comb out knots and tangles. Never pull on the hair or use a harsh brush to prevent damage.
