Cancer Facts Women Should Know: Part One

Cancer-Facts-WomenOne of the main causes of hair loss we find at Wigs and Hair Solutions is the result of cancer treatment. While cancer is never gender specific, there are certain types of cancers that more frequently found in women than in men. Whether it can help to prevent cancer completely or simply detect cancer earlier, these cancer facts are musts for all women.

Of the cancers that affect men and women every day, the most commonly found in women are ovarian, breast, colon, cervical, endometrial, lung, and skin. Here are some cancer facts surrounding each specific cancer for women to know.

Ovarian Cancer Facts

This type of cancer most often occurs in older women as well as those who have never had children, had a child after the age of thirty, or experienced infertility that could not be explained. Unfortunately, a test has yet to be created that will help detect ovarian cancer in its early stages. If you are experiencing frequent symptoms such as the following, see a doctor immediately:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Back pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Leg pain
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Issues with digestion
  • Feeling of frequent urination

Breast Cancer Facts

This is the most common cancer that affects women. While this can be experienced at any age, women over the age of 40 are more at risk, with the risk rising as they age. The best way to fight breast cancer is to detect the cancer early. This can include the following:

  • Women over the age of 40 should have a mammogram performed each year.
  • Women within their 20s and 30s should have a breast exam performed along with their normal primary doctor checkup.
  • Women should have an understanding of how their breasts normally feel and appear. Conducting a self-exam to feel for unusual lumps or an abnormal appearance.

Colon Cancer Facts

This type of cancer can be found pretty evenly in both men and women, but it typically occurs in those over the age of 50. Those who have a family history of colon cancer as well as those who have polyps in their rectum or colon tend to be at a higher risk for the cancer. Other factors that can increase a woman’s risk for colon cancer includes the following:

  • Being inactive
  • Being overweight
