Understanding The Major Types of Hair Loss

Consult a professional to determine the cause of your hair loss!

The truth is, everyone will experience hair loss as they age, but not all thinning is the same. This week we’re discussing four of the most common types of hair loss. Let’s explore.

Androgenetic Alopecia

Androgenetic alopecia, also known as patterned baldness, is the most common cause of hair loss affecting 70 percent of men and 40 percent of women. For most women experiencing androgenetic alopecia, the hair loss begins in their late 30s to 40s, and gradually thins throughout the entire scalp.

Caused by a combination of genetics and hormones, androgenetic alopecia causes the hair to first shed and become gradually thinner with each regrowth cycle.

Traction Alopecia

This form of alopecia is commonly seen with certain hairstyles or braiding styles that pull the hairline forcefully towards the vertex of the scalp. Women who wear their hair in tight ponytails, pigtails, or braids are more likely to develop traction alopecia.

Alopecia Areata

Also known as spot baldness, alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease in which hair is lost from some areas of the body. Due to the body’s failure to recognize its own body cells, it subsequently destroys its own tissue, resulting in small bald spots on the scalp or other places on the body.

Telogen Effluvium

Emotional or physiological stress are the two main causes of telogen effluvium. Due to a traumatic event or stressful experience, the hair follicles enter the resting phase of the hair cycle, resulting in thinning or shedding of the hair. Typically, hair growth is not restored until the person returns to a stable or relaxed state of being.
